Ed Sheeran’s eagerly awaited third album ÷ (Divide) has been greeted with praise from fans and critics alike and now looks set to defeat Adele’s 25 album to become the fastest ever selling UK release. Since its release last Friday, ÷ (Divide) has already smashed records selling 432,000 copies and outselling the entire UK Top 200 twice over!
In its first day, the Suffolk superstar sold more copies (232,000) than any artist managed in their first week in 2016. Adele’s ’25’ and Oasis’ ‘Be Here Now’ are currently the fastest selling UK albums both with an impressive 800,000 each, but Ed looks on track to smash this by the end of the week. All 16 tracks on the album have made it into the top 40 with songs Shape of You and Castle on the Hill already having charted at one and two respectively, an unprecedented feat in the UK charts.
Shape of You has also reached number one in over 30 countries including nations as far flung as Israel and the Philippines.
He could become the first person artist in the history of the UK charts to occupy the top four places in the charts at once with his singles. Ed has previously stated his intent to beat Adele in record sales saying “Adele is the one person who’s sold more records than me in the past 10 years. She’s the only person I need to sell more records than. That’s a big feat because her last album sold 20 million. But if I don’t set her as the benchmark then I’m selling myself short.’
In terms of streaming services, ÷ (Divide) has also been a roaring success. On Spotify, it smashed ‘first day’ streams for an album, beating the record set by The Weeknd’s Starboy by almost double.
