The History of the V Festival

The likes of Jay-Z, Pink and Ellie Goulding will descend on Chelmsford and Staffordshire in just over a month’s time for the 21st edition of the V Festival. The popular festival takes place every year and has two-star studded line-ups which alternate between both venues.

Every year the line-up gets bigger and better and the festival has grown considerably since it began in 1996. The idea was first formed when rock band Pulp’s lead singer Jarvis Cocker said that he had ambitions to play two outdoor venues in two days.

The band’s management then came up with the idea of playing a gig in Warrington and one in Chelmsford so fans in both the north and south of the country had the opportunity to see the band play. From this, the idea of getting other bands and musicians to perform as well as providing space for revellers to camp out was formed and V Festival was born.

Renowned for showcasing the biggest stars, low queue times and being well organised has given it a reputation of being one of the most popular music festivals in the UK.

The inaugural V Festival was known as ‘V96’ and each festival followed this pattern until 2013 where they became officially known as just V festival or even V Fest as it has become referred to commonly.

The northern venues have varied over the years with Leeds previously holding it in the late 90s.

Now, the festival has found its home alternating acts between Chelmsford and Staffordshire over the course of an August weekend. This year the festival takes place on the 19 and 20 August and has once again brought some huge acts.

A whole host of international artists will be entertaining audiences over the course of this year’s festival in what promises to be the biggest V Festival to date.
