Taking on the legends of light entertainment is no mean feat, but professional performers, Ian Ashpitel who plays Ernie and Jonty Stephens who effortlessly captures the quirks of the unforgettable Eric, are more than up to the task.
The two bring a hugely entertaining show and invitingly nostalgic performance, as they pay tribute to one of Britain’s favourite comedy duos, Morecambe and Wise. They expertly cycle through the routines and popular comedy material in a fresh way, with some unique material. Much like the real Morecambe and Wise, Ian and Jonty have a natural chemistry and have been friends for more than 30 years, since they first met at drama school back in 1983.
While bearing an uncanny resemblance to the originals, Eric and Little Ern are more than just lookalikes. The pair bring the impeccable timing, good-natured teasing and hilarious material of Morecambe and Wise to life with every performance, expertly capturing the comedy duo’s look, mannerisms and humour. The road to becoming the iconic comedy duo wasn’t necessarily an obvious one for the pair who were both committed to pursuing acting careers. However, when in 2002 an opportunity came up to do a short show on the theme of comedy through the ages, the pair came together, starring as Morecambe and Wise.
While the five-minute sketch went down well with the audience, it was some 11 years later, in 2013, before the boys decided to build upon this early performance. With the backing of theatre producer, James Seabright, Eric and Little Ern debuted their show at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2013. The show, which was a mix of their own material and classic scripts, saw Ian and Jonty bring to life some of Morecambe and Wise’ funniest moments, the sell-out show wowed audiences, received rave reviews and, in 2014, was nominated for an Olivier Award.
Working hard on recreating the chemistry and mannerisms of Morecambe and Wise, comedians Jonty and Ian demonstrate their comic timing and acting prowess in every performance and appearance. Through their love and understanding of the beloved personalities they are so expertly taking on, Jonty and Ian leave audiences in no doubt that they will, indeed, bring them sunshine.
