Beginning his career as a DJ managing a Manchester disco, Gary went on to join Manchester Piccadilly Radio to kickstart his broadcasting career. In 1982, Gary joined BBC Radio 1 and he began presenting the Saturday late-night show. Making his mark and winning the hearts of the general public, Gary was later scouted to become a regular presenter of Top of the Pops, further building his now credible knowledge of music. During his time with the BBC, Gary presented The Bit in the Middle, Let’s Do Lunch and The Lots of Love Feature. Leaving BBC Radio 1 in 1993, Gary joined Virgin Radio in 1994 and presented the Classic Tracks show on a Sunday morning.
Gary has also been the presenter of the Sunday late-night show on Virgin Radio and the CD chart show on Real Radio and Century Radio. In 2017, Gary rejoined the BBC on BBC Radio 2, co-presenting Sounds of the 80s with Sara Cox before taking over as the presenter of Sounds of the 80s. Now, Gary presents Sounds of the 80s amongst filling in for various other radio stars, having featured on the Steve Wright BBC Radio 2 show.
