Freemasons are one of the few DJ and production acts to achieve multiple UK Top 10 hits while also dominating global dance floors with chart-leading remixes across two decades. Originally formed in Brighton by Russell Small and James Wiltshire in the early 2000s, the duo built a reputation for uplifting house production, powerful vocal collaborations and crossover club anthems.
Russell Small began DJing in Brighton in the early 1990s, developing the underground house sound that would later define Freemasons’ success. Their breakthrough came with 'Love On My Mind' in 2005, a track that steadily climbed the UK charts and became a defining vocal house anthem. They followed with 'Turn Around', which reached number two in the UK Singles Chart, firmly establishing them as mainstream dance hitmakers. Further hits, including 'This Time Around' and 'Feel Good', reinforced their commercial and club credibility.
Beyond their own releases, Freemasons became internationally renowned remixers. Their reworks for artists including Beyoncé, Whitney Houston and Kelly Rowland were frequently selected as official radio edits across Europe, giving them a rare dual reputation for both underground credibility and mainstream impact. Their remix of Beyoncé’s Green Light and Kelly Rowland’s Work became especially influential within global club culture.
The duo headlined major international events, including Mardi Gras on multiple occasions and performed worldwide from Rio to Seoul. After a brief hiatus in 2014, Russell Small returned to production, later collaborating with Dino Psaras on new projects while continuing to perform Freemasons material. Today, Freemasons’ catalogue remains a cornerstone of 2000s vocal house, and their live DJ sets deliver a powerful blend of classic anthems and contemporary house energy.
