1976 brought Sheila’s recording debut, being given the chance to record Yesterday’s Dream with Alphonso Johnson. Sheila had already found immense fame by the time she had reached her early 20’s, having performed with George Duke, Herbie Hancock, Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye and Lionel Richie. A year after her recording debut, in 1977, she joined The George Duke Band as their singer. She has appeared on a number of the bands albums, including Don’t Let Go and Master Of The Game.
In 1984 Sheila met the esteemed artist Prince, who was amazed by her talent and wanted her to join his band. The two eventually joined together during the Purple Rain recording sessions, where she provided her vocals on Let’s Go Crazy and Erotic City. Sheila then went on to forge her own successful solo career, releasing her debut album The Glamorous Life. The single of the album reached number seven in the Hot 100 and also topped the dance charts.
As well as being a singer, Sheila has also spent time playing percussion for a number of esteemed artists. In 1998 she was given the opportunity to play percussion on Phil Collins True Colours cover. In the late 1990s she was leader of the house band on The Magic Hour talk show. Sheila has also spent time as a member of Ringo Starrs All Starr Band, playing for him in 2001, 2003 and 2006. In 2002 Sheila was given the opportunity to feature in a Beyonce song, Work It Out. Additionally, she had the chance to perform at Prince’s One Nite Alone… Live! concert as well as performing with him at the BRIT Awards.
In 2006 Sheila took on a new venture, forming a girl band with Kat Dyson, Rhonda Smith and Cassandra O’Neal called Chronicles Of Every Diva, or COED for short. The band was very successful, getting the opportunity to tour in Europe and Japan and releasing their own CD. Sheila continued to perform with a number of esteemed individuals as the years followed, continuing to work with Prince. She famously performed at the 2012 Academy Awards, featuring alongside Pharrell Williams and Hans Zimmer. Recently, in 2017, Sheila played percussion for the Boss Baby film soundtrack.
