Twayna Mayne is a razor-sharp comedian who has performed critically acclaimed shows at several prestigious festivals. She has also competed in several prominent comedy competitions, including Leicester Square Theatre New Act of the Year and Up the Creek’s one to Watch, reaching the finals on both occasions. Her live show, Black Girl, was very well received at the Edinburgh Fringe and Twayna continues to attract widespread success all over the country.
Her comedy material is inspired by her unique up-brining as a black child raised by a white foster mother in rural North Devon. Growing up in a predominantly white area as a black child heavily shaped her early childhood experiences and began raising questions about belonging and identity.
Struggling to find black role models to look up to, Twayna embarked on a journey of self-discovery through her critically acclaimed BBC Radio 4 series, Twayna Mayne: Black Woman, which tackles a variety of issues, including transracial adoption, identity, sexuality, and colourism, in a light-hearted manner. The show went on to win Best Comedy Production at the BBC Radio & Music Awards in 2020, and the second series received widespread critical acclaim. Hilarious, sharp, and bold, this accomplished artist is not afraid to tackle complex issues through her stand-up, bringing them to light in an insightful yet humorous manner.
