Aswad are one of Britain’s most influential reggae groups, renowned for blending roots reggae with strong R&B and soul influences. Formed in 1974 in the Ladbroke Grove area of West London, the band quickly established themselves as pioneers of British reggae, helping to shape the sound and expand its mainstream appeal both in the UK and internationally.
Originally led by the trio of Brinsley “Dan” Forde on vocals and rhythm guitar, Angus “Drummie Zeb” Gaye on vocals and drums, and Tony “Gad” Robinson on bass, Aswad built their reputation on rich harmonies, conscious lyrics and polished musicianship. Their willingness to incorporate soulful melodies and crossover production elements set them apart from many of their contemporaries and contributed to their broad audience reach.
Across a career spanning five decades, Aswad have released 21 albums and achieved significant chart success. Their UK number one single Don’t Turn Around in 1988, became one of the defining reggae-pop hits of the era, followed by further successes, including Shine in 1994. The group are three-time Grammy Award nominee, underscoring their international standing within the reggae world.
Aswad have toured extensively, performing to packed audiences at venues including London’s Royal Albert Hall and major festivals such as Reggae Sunsplash in Montego Bay, as well as touring West Africa, Israel and Japan. Regarded as one of the leading reggae bands to emerge from the UK, Aswad continue to represent a legacy of musical excellence, cultural influence and timeless reggae sound.
