Back in 1997, Ian joined Steps, an emerging British pop band that quickly became one of the biggest groups of the 90s and 00s. Steps quickly established a strong fan base, and achieved two number-one singles before 2001. They also achieved two number-one albums and several top-five singles, a series of achievements that earned them nomination for the Best Newcomer at the 1999 BRIT Awards. In 2001, Steps disbanded, and Ian joined Claire Richards to form the recording duo titled H & Claire.
