Madness is one of Britain’s most iconic and enduring bands, formed in Camden Town, north west London, in 1976. Rising to prominence during the late-1970s and early-1980s two-tone ska revival, the group became known for their infectious mix of ska, pop and new wave influences, combined with witty songwriting, unmistakable energy and an eccentric sense of fun. The band achieved remarkable chart success throughout the 1980s, spending an impressive 214 weeks on the UK Singles Chart, jointly holding the record alongside UB40 for the most weeks spent in the charts by a group during that decade. Madness released 16 UK Top 10 singles, including legendary tracks such as One Step Beyond, Baggy Trousers, It Must Be Love, and the number one hit House of Fun. Their international success was further cemented with Our House, which became their biggest US hit, reaching number seven on the Billboard Hot 100.
Over the course of their career, Madness have received significant industry recognition for their contribution to British music. In 1983, the band earned an Ivor Novello Award for Best Song for “Our House”, before receiving the prestigious Outstanding Song Collection award in 2000. Additional accolades include the Mojo Hall of Fame Award, the Silver Clef Icon Award and the Q Awards Idol Award, highlighting their lasting influence on popular culture and music.
With a discography spanning more than four decades, from One Step Beyond... in 1979 to Theatre of the Absurd Presents C'est la Vie in 2023, Madness continue to evolve while remaining true to the sound that made them famous.
