Maroon Town, a London based multi-racial eight piece band, burst onto the music scene 30 years ago as pioneers of a unique fusion sound. They were the first ska band to blend ska and reggae with rap, funk, and Latin/cumbia, creating a fresh world music genre marked by conscious and uplifting lyrics. Their initial recordings, produced by John Bradbury of The Specials, gained significant international attention, leading to extensive tours across Europe, Japan, and South America. This innovative mix set Maroon Town apart, establishing them as a ground breaking force in the global music community.
Over the years, Maroon Town has built a long-standing relationship with the British Council, which has seen them perform in over 15 countries. Their performances have spanned diverse venues, from theatres and festivals to schools, community centers, and even high-security prisons. Notably, they played at a prison in Jamaica just before an infamous escape by 27 inmates. Their music, characterised by politically charged and socially conscious themes, has resonated with audiences worldwide, providing a joyous and vital antidote to the challenges of contemporary life.
The band's success includes chart-topping tracks and significant radio play around the globe, with notable songs like "Fire," "Pound to the Dollar," "Cumbia Infernal," and "Ya Ya, Lemme Tell Dem." Their latest single release, 'Bullet (Proof Mix),' was highlighted as one of Craig Charles' singles of the year in 2022. Their sixth album, 'Freedom Call,' released in 2018 on Brixton Records, showcases their versatility, blending conscious reggae, jazz, and Big beat ska, including a collaboration with Basque Country singer Fermin Muguruza. Their international appeal is evident from their performances at festivals such as Skabour, Boom Town, and the London International Ska Festival.
