Bob Marley is an iconic singer, musician and songwriter credited with pioneering reggae music through his fusion of ska and rocksteady. Possessing a talent for song writing and a distinctive vocal range, Bob has played a substantial role in expanding the popularity of Jamaican music worldwide. Becoming a Rastafari icon and a global figure in popular culture over the course of his career, Bob began his journey in 1963.
Alongside Peter Toch and Bunny Wailer, Bob formed the Wailers. The trio released their debut album, The Wailing Wailers, in 1965, establishing the group as a serious contender in the reggae scene with the single One Love. After releasing several albums, the band was renamed Bob Marley and the Wailers. Upon moving to London, the group released the album The Best of The Wailers, representing a shift in their music style to a more rhythmic-based song construction.
Rising to global notoriety with the albums, Catch a Fire and Burnin, Bob’s international breakthrough came with a live version of No Woman No Cry. This was followed by his hit album, Rastaman Vibration, which reached the Top 50 of the Billboard Soul Charts. His album, Exodus, enjoyed critical success, and Bob was beginning to gain more popularity. However, his music career was cut short by a melanoma diagnosis. Passing at 36, Bob is considered one of the bestselling music artists of all time, with global sales of over 75 million records. He was subsequently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and has gained a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
