In 1993, the band was formed by Randy Fitzsimmons. Initially a garage rock band under a different name, they released their debut demo Sounds Like Sushi in the 90s. Upon moving managers, The Hive released more critically acclaimed music, Oh Lord! When? How?, Barely Legal and A.K.A I-D-I-O-T. The Hive described their second album as "a velvet glove with brass knuckles, both brutal and sophisticated at the same time", reflecting their versatile, multifaceted style of music. In 2001, Your New Favourite Band reached number seven in the UK Album Charts, raising the band's profile.
Only the most popular, cinematic of bands are featured in video games, so it is no surprise that The Hives' song, Main Offender, featured in Rock Band. Further chart-toppers include Walk Idiot Walk, which reached number 13 in the UK Singles Chart, Uptight, which featured on the videogame Gran Turismo 4 and Hate To Say I Told You So, which appeared in the 2002 Spider-Man film. At the 2003 NME Awards, The Hives were awarded Best International Band and Best Dressed Band, followed by Artist of the Year, Rock Group of the Year, Album of the Year, Producer of the Year at the 2005 Swedish Grammis Awards.
In 2012, The Hives' album Lex Hives was released, which led the band to feature on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and the Coachella Valley Music Festival.
