Chesney Hawkes’ career began at the age of 19 when he starred as the title character in the film Buddy's Song, which featured his iconic single, "The One and Only." Written by Nik Kershaw and with his brother on drums, the track became a monumental success and was later featured in the opening credits of Doc Hollywood (1991), as the sound of an alarm clock in Moon (2009), and as a mobile phone ringtone in Source Code (2011). Hawkes returned to television in Channel 4's The Games in March 2005, where he earned a Bronze Medal, and subsequently appeared on ITV's Hit Me Baby One More Time in April of the same year.
In May 2005, Chesney released the single "Another Fine Mess," which peaked at number 48 and became his best-selling single in over a decade. Further showcasing his versatility, Chesney collaborated on the Lexus Symphony Orchestra project, composing two original pieces performed by the London Symphony Orchestra in 2007 to highlight the quality of Lexus' in-car audio systems.
Hawkes also brought his musical talents to the stage, starring in the musical Can't Smile Without You, which features over 40 Barry Manilow songs. In the production, he played Tony Lowiman, a man who falls in love with a girl named Mandy while visiting New York.
