Jo Brand is a leading British comedian, actress, and writer available for bookings through the Champions Music and Entertainment agency. A uniquely dour comic, Jo headlines some of the country’s biggest comedy shows, sitcoms, and panel shows. Jo initially turned to comedy after working as a psychiatric nurse for ten years. Persuaded by her agent Michael Hardee, she started working on the British alternative comedy. Jo’s style was unique even for the fans of alternative comedy with a terse, monotone voice eliciting sharp, funny remarks on pop culture, the media, and gender issues. Much of her early career was tough as crowds were not used to the content or the delivery.
Jo’s thick skin from dealing with patients made her durable during these early days and she established herself as a headliner in no time. Jo made a break into television in 1993 on the BBC show The Brain Drain. Alongside her resident panellist Tony Hawks, Jo impressed audiences eventually landing her own series on Channel 4. This first venture into her own shows was co-written with Jim Miller and was titled Jo Brand Through the Cake Hole. Jo went on to branch out into several solo shows after her initial success with the likes of Jo Brand’s Commercial Breakdown. With her status established Jo made guest appearances in several popular comedy acts including Absolutely Fabulous and Star Spell.
Jo began her love affair with panel shows appearing on Have I Got News for You and QI. Her acerbic wit and dry humour was a hit with fans ensuring she had a place on any panel for several years to come. A personal achievement for Jo was appearing on Countdown. As a long-time fan, she went on to sit in ‘Dictionary Corner’ 88 times, becoming good friends with Richard Whiteley in the process. Jo is an active proponent of both charity and politics.
She is a supporter of ActionAid, appeared in Gareth Malone’s All Star Choir to raise money for BBC’s Children in Need, and completed a 150-mile walk across Britain to raise money for Sport Relief. Politically Jo has always been engaged in local and national politics as a staunch supporter of the Labour Party. Jo is a patron of the International Animal Rescue, the Prader-Willi Syndrome Association, London Nightline, and the National Self Harm Network. As if this weren’t enough she is also the president of the Ectopic Pregnancy Trust. Jo is a uniquely talented comedian available to headline your corporate event, television broadcast, product launch or festival.
