Born into a musical family Joseph is the youngest brother of artists Russel Simmons and Danny Simmons and also the cofounder of Def Jam Records. His popularity rocketed following MTV's reality show Run's House which was a show from 2005-2009 that revolved around his everyday life with his family.
Before founding Run-D.M.C. Joseph was the lead vocalist in The Force which was a hip-hop group. He founded Run-D.M.C. along with Darryl 'D.M.C.' McDaniels and the late DJ Jason 'Jam-Master Jay' Mizell and took on the role of lead vocalist. Founded in 1983, they became one of the most influential and famous musical acts in history and effortlessly shaped the hip-hop culture. Along with the help of other artists the group pioneered new school hip hop music and became the first ever group within the genre to have an album certified gold.
The group became the first in their genre to gain endless achievements from the first to have their music broadcast on MTV, to be nominated for a Grammy Award, to earn a platinum record and a multi-platinum certification. They also became the only hip-hop act to perform at the 1985 Live Aid Concert in the US.
In 2005 Rev Run featured in Liberty X single Song 4 Lovers which reached number two on the Box UK charts and number four on the MTV UK charts it also rotated heavily on five other music channels within the UK. He then released his first solo album Distortion which used samples from songs such as God of Thunder, Sweet Home Alabama and I Love Rock & Roll.
