The Beat are a British band whose distinctive sound fuses Latin, ska, pop, soul, reggae and punk rock. Formed during the late 1970s ska revival movement, the group became one of the defining acts of the era with their energetic rhythms and socially conscious songwriting. The classic lineup featured Dave Wakeling on vocals and guitar, Ranking Roger on vocals, Andy Cox on guitar, David Steele on bass, Everett Morton on drums, Saxa a.k.a. Lionel Augustus Martin on saxophone and keyboard player Dave ‘Blockhead’ Wright.
The band quickly rose to prominence with their debut album 'I Just Can’t Stop It', released in May 1980, which entered the UK Albums Chart at number three. The record produced several successful singles, including 'Mirror in the Bathroom', 'Hands Off...She’s Mine', 'Best Friend' and 'Can’t Get Used to Losing You'. These tracks helped establish The Beat as one of the leading bands of the British 2 Tone and ska revival scene, blending upbeat rhythms with sharp political and social commentary.
The Beat followed their debut success with two further studio albums in the early 1980s, 'Wha'ppen?' in 1981 and 'Special Beat Service' in 1982. Across this period, the band released numerous popular singles, including 'Save It for Later', 'I Confess', 'Too Nice to Talk To' and 'All Out to Get You', many of which broke into the UK Top 40. Their music also gained international exposure through radio stations such as KROQ FM in Los Angeles, as well as Australian radio station Triple J and television programmes like 'Countdown'.
Throughout their career, The Beat built a strong reputation as a powerful live act, touring extensively across the world. They performed alongside major artists including David Bowie, The Clash, The Police, The Pretenders, R.E.M., The Specials and Talking Heads. Known for their vibrant stage presence and timeless catalogue of ska and new wave hits, The Beat continue to be hired for festivals, concerts and heritage music events where audiences want to experience the energy of one of the most influential bands of the 2 Tone era.
