The famous band, The Human League was formed by Phillip Oakey in Sheffield in 1977. Beginning as an avant-garde all-male synthesizer group; the band underwent some changes after the departure of Martin Ware and Ian Craig Marsh.
Developing a unique New Pop sound, the band began to find major success. Being at the forefront of the movement, The Human League embodied the danceable music, androgynous look, and emphasized synths and drum machines that audiences craved in the 80s. As a result, The Human League are often viewed with the same nostalgia as contemporaries like ABC, Elvis Costello and the Pretenders, Orange Juice, and even Michael Jackson.
The band signed to Virgin Records in 1979 releasing their two first albums Reproduction and Travelogue to gold status while their third album Dare spent four weeks at the top of the UK Album Chart eventually going triple platinum. Such was the success of Dare that it was labelled as one of pop music’s most influential albums. The highest watermark on this album was their single “Don’t You Want Me” which sold almost 1.5 million copies in the UK alone. This success saw The Human League turn heads across the pond winning a Grammy Award nomination for Best New Artist.
The singles ‘Mirror Man’, ‘(Keep Feeling) Fascination’, and ‘I Love You Too Much’ kept the band’s momentum, performing well across the globe. The band were honoured at the Brit Music Awards winning the Best British Newcomer category. The Human League have never wavered from this success with the next big hit coming in the form of their 1990’s album Octopus. This album would put the band back in the top 10 and bring the group their third gold-certified record.
With their success as trailblazers, The Human League have influenced many other pop acts including the Pet Shop Boys, Moby, and Little Boots. Similarly, their evergreen music has been covered and sampled by various international artists including the Utah Saints, Ministry of Sound, Craig David, and George Michael. With such a rich history of groundbreaking music, The Human League are a rare talent ideal for concerts, music festivals, and other events.
